How to Choose Bathroom Finishes That Work Beautifully Together

Hi, I'm Eileen. Have you ever walked into a bathroom showroom and fallen in love with just about everything? Beautiful tiles, gorgeous tapware, stunning vanities... and suddenly you're wondering how on earth you're going to choose!

The tricky part isn't necessarily finding finishes you love. It's making sure they all work together once they're in the same room.

A bathroom might be one of the smaller spaces in your home, but there are plenty of decisions to make. From tiles and cabinetry to tapware, mirrors and lighting, every choice contributes to the overall look and feel.

And while there's nothing wrong with having a little fun with your selections, you don't want to end up with a bathroom where everything is competing for attention.

So, before you start ordering samples and making final decisions, here are 8 things I recommend considering to help you create a bathroom that feels beautifully balanced.

1. Start with the Overall Look You Want to Create

Before choosing individual finishes, think about how you want your bathroom to feel.

Are you imagining a light, fresh coastal bathroom? Something warm and earthy? Or perhaps a more contemporary space with clean lines and a little contrast?

Having a clear direction makes all those smaller decisions much easier.

It also helps to consider the style of the rest of your home. Your bathroom doesn't need to look identical to every other room, but it should feel like it belongs.

My tip: Save a few bathroom images you love and look for what they have in common. You might notice similar tile tones, cabinetry finishes or tapware styles. Those details will help you identify what you're naturally drawn to.

2. Choose Your Tiles Carefully

Tiles are often one of the biggest visual elements in a bathroom, so they're a sensible place to begin.

Think about both your floor and wall tiles and how they'll work together. You might choose a beautiful feature tile and keep everything else relatively simple, or create interest through different textures and tile sizes within a similar colour palette.

What I'd avoid is choosing several statement tiles that all compete for attention.

And don't forget the grout! The colour you choose can make a big difference to the finished look. Matching grout creates a more seamless appearance, while contrasting grout highlights the individual tile shapes.

My tip: Always look at your tile samples together, preferably in the actual bathroom. Colours can appear quite different depending on the lighting and what they're sitting beside.

3. Coordinate Your Vanity and Cabinetry

Your vanity is another important part of the overall design.

Timber-look cabinetry can introduce warmth and texture, while painted or laminate finishes can create a cleaner, more understated look.

Think about how your vanity will work with your floor tiles, wall tiles and benchtop.

You don't need everything to match perfectly. In fact, a little contrast can make a bathroom much more interesting.

The trick is finding a balance so the finishes complement rather than compete with one another.

And of course, practicality matters too. Consider storage, how easy the surfaces will be to maintain and whether the finish will suit everyday use.

4. Select Tapware That Complements Your Finishes

Chrome, brushed nickel, brass, bronze, matte black... there are certainly plenty of tapware finishes to choose from!

My advice is to look at the entire bathroom before deciding.

Warm metallic finishes can look beautiful alongside earthy tiles and timber cabinetry, while chrome or brushed nickel can work particularly well with cooler or more neutral palettes.

But these aren't hard-and-fast rules. It's the combination of finishes that matters.

My tip: If you're mixing metallic finishes, do it deliberately. Choose one as your main finish and introduce another sparingly, rather than having every fitting in a different colour.

5. Don't Forget the Benchtop and Basin

It's easy to concentrate on the tiles and tapware and leave the benchtop and basin until later.

But these finishes can make a real difference to how cohesive your bathroom feels.

Consider the colour and texture of your benchtop alongside the vanity cabinetry and tiles. A subtle stone-look surface might bring several tones together, while a simpler finish can give a more detailed tile room to breathe.

Your basin matters too. Think about whether you prefer an inset, undermount or above-counter basin and how the shape works with your chosen vanity and tapware.

And remember to consider cleaning and maintenance. A beautiful finish should still be practical for everyday living.

6. Think About Mirrors and Lighting

Mirrors and lighting are often treated as finishing touches, but I prefer to consider them much earlier.

A large mirror can make a bathroom feel more spacious and reflect light around the room, while a framed mirror can introduce another decorative element.

Lighting is just as important. You'll want good practical lighting around the vanity, but softer lighting can also help create a more relaxing atmosphere.

And because lighting affects how colours and finishes appear, it's worth considering before making your final selections.

7. Bring Your Samples Together Before You Commit

This is one of the most important steps.

A tile might look beautiful on its own. So might the vanity finish, benchtop and tapware. But until you see them together, it's difficult to know whether they really work.

Look at the undertones, textures and overall balance. Does one finish stand out too much? Are there too many competing patterns? Does the combination feel warm, cool or somewhere in between?

And this is where Riva comes in!

Riva is my mobile styling and selections studio, filled with beautiful samples including tiles, carpets, fabrics and cushions.

For bathroom projects, I can bring tile samples to you, making it easier to explore different colours, textures and finishes in your own home.

We can then consider how your tile selections will work alongside your planned vanity, benchtop, tapware and other bathroom finishes.

It's all about making those individual choices feel like part of one beautiful, cohesive design.

8. Keep Your Budget in Mind from the Beginning

It's very easy to get carried away when you're surrounded by beautiful bathroom finishes!

But you don't need to choose the most expensive option in every category to create a bathroom that looks and feels beautiful.

Decide where you'd like to invest and where a more affordable alternative will work just as well.

You might choose a feature tile for one area rather than covering every wall, or invest in a vanity finish you absolutely love while keeping the remaining selections simple.

My tip: Make your major selections together before committing your budget to one standout item.

There's nothing worse than falling in love with an expensive tile only to discover it leaves very little for everything else!

Bringing Your Bathroom Finishes Together

A beautiful bathroom isn't necessarily about having the latest tiles, the most expensive tapware or a statement vanity.

It's about choosing finishes that complement one another and create a space that feels balanced, comfortable and right for your home.

Start with an overall direction, consider how each material works with the next, and don't rush the selection process.

With my background in residential drafting, interior design and colour consulting, I understand the importance of looking at the whole space rather than making each selection in isolation.

And with Riva, my mobile styling and selections studio, I can bring that guidance to you and help take the overwhelm out of choosing colours, materials and finishes.

If you're planning a bathroom renovation or update, I'd love to help you bring your ideas together and create a space you'll enjoy for years to come.
