10 Secrets to a Well-Balanced Room: Interior Styling Tips That Work

Hi, I’m Eileen! One of the things I love most about interior styling is how small details can completely change the way a room feels.

You can have all the right pieces. Beautiful furniture, artwork, and lighting but if the balance isn’t right, like I often say, something just feels off.

The good news? Achieving a well-balanced room doesn’t mean following strict design rules. It’s about creating harmony. A space that feels comfortable, flows naturally, and reflects your personality.

Here are my tried-and-true styling tips to help you find that perfect balance in any room.

1. Start with Function and a Focal Point

Before moving furniture or adding decor, think about how the room will be used. Is it a space for relaxing, entertaining, or working?

Once you’ve decided on the function, choose a focal point. This could be a fireplace, a large artwork, a window with a view, or even a beautiful rug. The rest of your design will flow from this starting point.

2. Symmetry or Asymmetry? What’s Your Style?

Some people love symmetry - matching lamps, balanced furniture, and mirror-image layouts. Others prefer an asymmetrical approach, which feels a little more relaxed and organic.

Neither is wrong! The key is to be intentional with whichever style you choose.

3. Mix It Up with Furniture and Finishes

Rooms look far more interesting when you mix different sizes, styles, and finishes.

Combine wood, metal, and soft textures to create depth and contrast. A well-balanced space has variety, but it still feels cohesive so aim for pieces that complement rather than compete with one another.

4. Get the Scale Right

Furniture that’s too large can overpower a room, while pieces that are too small can make it feel sparse. Balance is all about proportion.

If you have a chunky sofa, pair it with lighter accent chairs or a slimline coffee table to even things out. In smaller rooms, choose furniture that fits comfortably without blocking pathways or crowding corners.

5. Play with Visual Weight

A beautifully styled room feels anchored, not top-heavy.

For example, in a living area, you could place a floor lamp beside the sofa on one side, and a side table with decor of varying heights. Maybe a stack of books and a candle on the other.

This creates visual balance without feeling too matchy match.

6. Don’t Forget the Rug

A rug grounds your space and brings everything together. Make sure it’s the right size.

Ideally, the front legs of your furniture should sit on the rug or at least touch the edge. Too small, and the rug will make the room feel disconnected; too large, and it can overwhelm the layout.

7. Layer Your Textures

Soft furnishings are the secret to warmth and depth. Layer cushions, throws, and fabrics in complementary tones and textures to create a sense of comfort and luxury.

Think linen against velvet, wool beside timber, and ceramics next to soft upholstery.

8. Create Mood with Lighting

Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in styling.

Use a mix of lamps, floor lights, and overhead lighting to create ambience. Highlight your favourite artwork or decorative pieces to draw attention where you want it most.

9. Dress the Windows Thoughtfully

Floor-to-ceiling curtains or drapes instantly add height and elegance to a room.

If that’s not the look you’re after, or your ceiling doesn’t allow it, hang your curtain rod at least 200–250mm above the window or halfway between the window top and ceiling. Extend the rod equally past both sides of the window to make it feel larger and more open.

10. Choose Artwork and Decor with Intention

When selecting artwork and decorative pieces, think about scale, texture, and colour. Art that’s too small can get lost, while pieces that are too big can dominate.

Aim for balance. The right piece will connect your room’s colours and create harmony.
