Let's just say making the colour and material selections for your new home is a big thing!!

There are some (like me) that can't wait and are excited to make their selections, and then there are others that dread the thought all together. Honestly, it makes no difference which type you fall into - I am here to guide you as you embark on your journey of creating your new home.

Today I'm sharing the process of a recently completed project where I had the pleasure of guiding my client (whom I will call Jen) through her initial colour and material selections for her new home to the final touches of furniture procurement and styling.

Initial Consultation and Understanding Jen's Vision.

The project began with a phone call from Jen, it was time for her to make her selections for her new build. In that conversation Jen mentioned she had an idea of what she wanted but wasn't confident and she had a tendency to be indecisive. Not a problem, I understand building a new home can be a stressful time and I know, some find the selections process quite daunting. I knew from chatting with Jen prior to setting an appointment that she would benefit from some extra time allowed.

In the initial consultation Jen explained she was looking to create a modern and luxe space but had to be comfortable and durable enough for her teenage children. We discussed the family's lifestyle, preferences, and the overall feel they wanted for their home.

Colour and Material Selections

With a clear vision in mind, we moved on to the colour and material selection process. This phase took time but, it was time well spent as Jen discovered that, with professional guidance from a person that had her best interests at heart, the selections process wasn't the monster task she had imagined it would be. I should add that a big part of what I do is provide physical samples so my clients can see and touch the items, allowing them to experience the feeling of what their home will be.

As Jen has a tendency to change her mind, she opted for a base palette of grey and white, which is well-suited for easily changing the look and feel of her home down the track without having to make major construction changes.

Materials:

  • Flooring: For practicality we selected 600mm x 600mm tiles to the main areas of the home in a grey with a warm undertone. The bedrooms were carpeted in a durable and easily maintainable twist pile carpet.

  • Kitchen Island Front: We added texture with a stacker stone which is accentuated by strip lighting.

  • Benches: For the kitchen and bathrooms, we chose stone (prior to June 30 2024, there are many other alternatives in production now)

  • Cabinetry: We used white base cabinetry and added a timber grain laminate to the overhead cupboards in the kitchen to bring in some warmth and elevate the space.

  • Splashback: A bronzed glass splash back in the kitchen is absolutely stunning and is a major element in creating a modern luxe style.

  • Tapware: Gold finish is the icing on the cake.

  • Lighting: Gold pendant lights in the entry and dining areas add an element of class as do the cluster of pendants in the main living areas.

  • Window Furnishings: Floor to ceiling sheers in the living areas and main bedroom with block out lining on a separate track allow for privacy and control over the sun and light entering the home at different times of the day. All other windows were furnished with a block-out roller for practicality and to minimise the cost in the areas that didn't need floor to ceiling coverings.

Space Planning and Furniture Procurement

Once the colour and material selections were sorted, Jen asked the question "Can you help me with the furnishings?" Of course, my answer was I'd love to!!

When putting a furniture plan together it's important to draw a floor plan to scale of the areas to be furnished and create some layouts with items also drawn to scale so you can decide on which functions the best for the family ensuring there is ample space for traffic and the scale of the furniture is suitable for the areas.

It's a good idea to start your search early for furnishings and decor to ensure they are available for delivery when required.

Once the layout of the furniture was confirmed by Jen, I set about finding the perfect pieces of furniture to deliver a family friendly, modern luxe vibe. Upon determining the colour palette and presenting possible options to Jen, we scheduled a shopping trip so she could see the items in reality and feel the comfort level, in turn confirming the items to be purchased. Now I must tell you these are fun days to be had. They generally consist of an early start to the day, amazing furniture, rug/decor showroom visits that normally involve a few laughs and impromptu dancing when we find "THE" perfect piece.

Final Styling

The day finally arrived for delivery of any outstanding items, the hanging of the artwork and pulling it all together with the soft furnishings and decor items.

I absolutely love these days, seeing the whole concept come together and to top it all off, there is nothing more rewarding than when a client looks you in the eye and says thank you, I love it!

Thanks Jen, it has been an absolute pleasure working with you, getting to know you and helping you create the home you desired for your family.

What my clients have to say

"Without Eileen's excellent help and guidance in choosing interior colours for our newly acquired but outdated home we would still be going round in circles! She is so easy to talk to and listened to our vague ideas. Her eye for co-ordinating, from our walls, kitchen, drapes, bathrooms, carpet, etc - all are going to look fabulous! Plus putting us on to local craftsmen / shops is a bonus. We highly recommend Eileen to anyone who is looking for an excellent colour consultant - at a very competitive price."
