How to Style a Bookshelf

Hi, I'm Eileen. A beautifully styled bookshelf is one of those things that looks effortless when it's done well.

But getting there? That's where most people get stuck.

The good news is that a few simple changes like editing what's on there, varying the heights and mixing books with objects can completely transform it.

Here's where I'd start.

Start by taking everything off

I know it feels counterintuitive, but the best place to start is with a completely empty shelf.

It's so much easier to build a considered arrangement from scratch than to try and work around what's already there.

Once everything is off, give it a quick clean and then look at the shelf with fresh eyes before you put a single thing back.

Not everything needs to go back on

This is the part most people skip and it's where the magic happens.

Before you start restyling, edit what you have. Pull out anything broken, faded, or that you genuinely don't love anymore. A shelf styled with fewer, well-chosen pieces will almost always look more considered than one that's packed to the edges.

đź’« My tip: If you're not sure whether something earns its place, set it aside. You can always add it back but you'll probably find you don't miss it.

Work in odd numbers and vary the height

This is one of those styling rules that sounds a bit arbitrary until you try it and then you'll never go back.

Grouping objects in threes or fives rather than pairs creates a more relaxed, organic feel. And varying the height within each grouping. For example, a tall vase next to a shorter stack of books next to a small object. It stops the eye from getting bored.

When everything sits at the same height, a shelf can feel flat and predictable. A little variation makes it feel intentional and alive.

Mix books with objects

Books alone make a shelf look like a library. The trick is breaking them up with objects that bring in different textures, materials and heights.

Think ceramics, small sculptures, a plant or two, candles, trays, or a piece of artwork leaned casually against the back of the shelf. The contrast between books and objects is what creates that layered, curated feel.

If you're looking for pieces that work beautifully on a shelf, browse my online shop for a carefully curated selection of homewares and decorative objects.

And don't be afraid to turn some books sideways and stack them horizontally, it's a simple trick that immediately makes a shelf feel more styled.

đź’« My tip: Vary your materials. A mix of timber, ceramic, glass and greenery will always feel more interesting than objects that are all the same finish.

Bring in something living

A small plant or some greenery can completely transform a shelf. It softens the hard edges, adds colour and brings a sense of life to the arrangement.

It doesn't need to be high maintenance. A small indoor plant, a succulent or even a sprig of dried botanicals can do the job beautifully.

Step back and edit again

Once you've arranged everything, step back and look at the shelf as a whole rather than section by section.

Does anything jump out as too heavy, too crowded or too matchy match?

Remove it and see how it feels. Just like cushion styling, the best shelf arrangements often happen after you've taken things away rather than added more.

Your Shelves Should Feel Like You

A beautifully styled shelf doesn't need to look like it came from a magazine. It just needs to feel considered, personal and reflective of the home it's in.
