How Many Cushions Does Your Sofa Actually Need?

Hi, I’m Eileen. Can I tell you the number one thing people get wrong with cushions? They focus on the cushions before they've looked at the room. But we'll get to that. 😊

Too few cushions and a sofa can feel unfinished. Too many and you're constantly moving them out of the way just to sit down.

The good news is that creating a beautifully layered look doesn't have to be complicated. Here's the simple process I use when styling cushions.

Step 1 - Look at the room BEFORE you look at cushions

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people choosing cushions because they like them, without considering everything else already happening in the room.

Before heading to your favourite shop, take a moment and look at the colours, textures, artwork, flooring, window furnishings and furniture already in the space.

Your cushions should feel connected to the room rather than looking like they've been added as an afterthought.

💫 My tip: If you're stuck, pull colours from your artwork, rug or favourite decorative piece. It's one of the easiest ways to create a cohesive look.

Step 2 - Decide how much styling suits the room

Not every home needs a mountain of cushions. A relaxed family room might only need three carefully chosen cushions, while a formal living room may suit a more layered approach.

The style of your furniture also plays a role. A large sectional sofa can comfortably handle more cushions than a smaller two-seater.

The goal is balance, not quantity.

Step 3 - Mix textures, not just colours

This is where people often overcomplicate things. You don't need five different colours to create interest.

In fact, I often achieve a more sophisticated look by keeping the colour palette simple and introducing different textures instead.

Think linen, boucle, velvet, woven fabrics or subtle patterns. Texture adds depth without creating visual clutter.

Step 4 - Vary the size

When every cushion is identical, the arrangement can feel flat.

Mixing larger and smaller cushions, or introducing a small rectangle cushion, creates a more relaxed and layered feel.

It's a small change that can make a surprisingly big difference.

Step 5 - Know when to stop

This is probably the most important step of all.

Once you've arranged everything, remove one cushion and see how it feels. Then remove another. Quite often the best styling happens when you take things away rather than keep adding.

And the ones that don't make the cut? No stress, pop them in the bedroom, a reading nook, or the guest room.

Nothing goes to waste, it just finding its right place.

💫 My tip: If people have to move half the cushions before they can sit down, you've probably gone too far.

Creating a Home that Feels Comfortable and Beautiful

Cushions may seem like a small detail, but they can have a surprisingly big impact on how a room feels.

When thoughtfully selected and layered, they add softness, texture, and personality without overwhelming the space.
