How to Use Colour to Make Small Spaces Feel Bigger

Hi, I’m Eileen. Small spaces can sometimes be the hardest to get right. When a room feels cramped or closed in, it’s easy to assume the only solution is to renovate or physically make the space bigger.

But often, the biggest change can come from something much simpler - colour.

The colours you choose have a huge impact on how spacious a room feels. With the right palette and a few thoughtful choices, even compact spaces can feel lighter, calmer, and far more open.

Here are some of the ways I use colour to help smaller spaces feel bigger and more balanced.

Keep the Base Palette Light

Lighter colours naturally reflect more light, which helps a room feel brighter and more spacious. Soft whites, warm neutrals, pale greys, and muted tones are all great options for creating an open feel.

That doesn’t mean everything has to be plain white though. The key is choosing colours that feel soft and easy on the eye rather than overly heavy or contrasting.

Create Flow with Consistent Colour

One of the easiest ways to visually expand a home is by creating flow between rooms.

When adjoining spaces are completely different colours, it can make the home feel more broken up and enclosed. Using a consistent palette throughout helps the eye move naturally from one room to the next, which instantly creates a greater sense of openness.

My tip: I often use variations of the same tone throughout a home rather than introducing completely different colours in every room. It helps everything feel calmer and more connected.

Don’t Be Afraid of Darker Colours

This surprises a lot of people, but darker colours can actually work beautifully in smaller spaces when used well.

Deep greens, charcoals, or moody blues can add depth and soften the edges of a room, making the boundaries feel less obvious. The result can feel cosy, layered, and surprisingly sophisticated.

The key is balance. Pairing deeper colours with good lighting and lighter furnishings so the space doesn’t feel too heavy.

Keep Contrast Soft

Strong contrast can visually chop up a room and make it feel busier.

Using colours that sit within a similar tonal range creates a softer, more seamless feel. This doesn’t mean everything has to be matchy match but reducing harsh visual breaks can make a room feel much more spacious.

Think Beyond the Walls

Colour isn’t just about paint. Flooring, furniture, window furnishings, and cabinetry all contribute to how large or small a room feels.

When larger pieces sit within a similar colour palette, the space feels more cohesive and less visually cluttered.

Use Accent Colours Carefully

Smaller spaces can still handle personality and colour, it just needs to be intentional.

Rather than introducing lots of competing colours, I prefer choosing one or two accent tones and repeating them subtly throughout the room. This keeps the space interesting without overwhelming it.

Don’t Forget the Ceiling

Believe it or not, the ceiling can have a surprisingly big impact on how open a room feels.

In many cases, keeping the ceiling light helps draw the eye upward and creates a sense of height.

Sometimes, though, carrying the wall colour onto the ceiling can blur the edges of the room and make the whole space feel softer and larger.

Let Natural Light Work with Your Colours

Natural light changes the way colour behaves throughout the day.

Window furnishings that allow light to filter through - like soft sheers - can help maximise brightness and stop smaller rooms from feeling closed in.

My tip: Before committing to any colour, I always recommend testing samples in the actual room and looking at them at different times of day. Light changes everything!

Making Small Spaces Feel Beautiful

Small spaces don’t need to feel limiting. With thoughtful colour choices, they can feel calm, welcoming, and beautifully balanced.

It’s not about trying to trick the eye, it’s about creating a space that feels good to live in.
