How to Choose Tiles That Won’t Date Your Home

Hi, I'm Eileen. Can I let you in on something I see more often than you think?

Someone renovates their bathroom or lays new floors, and within a few years it already feels like it belongs to a different decade.

It's not that they made a bad decision. It's that they chose tiles that were very much of the moment and the moment passed.

The good news is that choosing tiles you'll genuinely love for years isn't about playing it safe or settling for boring. It's about understanding what makes a tile timeless, and what makes it trend-dependent.

Once you know the difference, the whole process feels so much clearer 😊

Start with the bones of the space

Before you look at a single tile, think about the style of your home. Its design, its proportions, the way light moves through it.

A tile that looks stunning in a sleek, contemporary home can feel completely wrong in a Queenslander or a coastal cottage. Your tiles should feel like they belong to your home, not like they've been imported from a Pinterest board that has nothing to do with your space.

This is always my starting point with clients, and it narrows the field enormously before we've even talked about colour or finish.

Lean towards timeless materials

Some materials have been used in homes for hundreds of years for a very good reason - they're beautiful, they're durable and they never really go out of style.

Natural stone is a perfect example. Travertine, marble and limestone have a warmth and variation that no manufactured tile can truly replicate, and they tend to age gracefully rather than looking tired.

Porcelain is another brilliant option. It's hardwearing, low maintenance and now comes in finishes that beautifully mimic natural stone at a more accessible price point.

If you're on the Sunshine Coast and want to see the range in person, the team at Casa Ceramica have showrooms in Birtinya and Nambour with a beautiful selection of both natural stone and porcelain.

If you'd prefer to see tiles in your own home first...

One of the things my clients love most is that I don't just talk about tiles in theory, I bring them to you.

Riva, my mobile design studio, comes stocked with a curated selection of tiles, materials and finishes so you can see exactly how they'll look in your own light, in your own space, before you commit to a thing.

There's a big difference between loving a tile in a showroom and knowing it's right for your home and this is exactly how I bridge that gap.

Be thoughtful with size and format

Large format tiles have had a big moment and they're not going anywhere, which is reassuring if you love them.

But the finish and the grout colour you choose can make a significant difference to how timeless they feel.

As a general rule, tiles laid with slim, neutral grout lines tend to feel more timeless than bold grout colours or heavily patterned layouts that are very much of the moment.

That doesn't mean you can't have fun with format. A classic brick lay or a simple stacked pattern in a bathroom or splashback can look beautifully considered without feeling try-hard.

Use pattern tiles with intention

I'm not here to talk you out of a beautiful patterned tile, I love them! But there's a difference between using them intentionally and letting them take over.

A feature floor in an ensuite, a splashback in the kitchen, a niche in the shower, these are spaces where a bolder tile can shine without dominating the whole room. Keep the surrounding tiles simple and let the feature do its job.

The homes that feel timeless are usually the ones where someone has made deliberate, considered choices rather than trying to make every surface interesting at once.

Think about how it all connects

One of the most common mistakes I see in renovations is treating each room in isolation - choosing bathroom tiles, then kitchen tiles, then floor tiles, without thinking about how they all flow together.

Your home will feel so much more cohesive if there's a thread connecting the spaces. That doesn't mean everything needs to match, but there should be a conversation happening between the materials, tones and textures throughout.

This is actually one of my favourite things to help clients with - pulling together a selection schedule that makes every room feel intentional and connected rather than like a series of separate decisions.

A note on trends

Trends aren't the enemy as some of them become classics. But it's worth asking yourself honestly - do I love this tile, or do I love that it's everywhere right now?

If you can picture it in your home in ten years and still feel good about it, that's a pretty reliable sign. If you're not sure, that's worth sitting with before you commit.

Ready to find tiles you'll love for years?

Tiles are one of those decisions that are worth getting right the first time, they're not something you want to be replacing in five years.
